Gus Hansen has been a competitor for many years. Before he played poker, he was a ranked backgammon player. He started playing poker in Santa Cruz, California and is originally from Copenhagen, Denmark.
Known as "Gattling Gun" or "The Great Dane" in poker circles, Gus divides his time between continents, living in both Monte Carlo and Las Vegas.
Gus Hansen's poker play is unconventional compared to other players. He didn't learn how to play poker by reading books; he came up with his own style through trial and error. Gus Hanson's post flop play is so good that he can play a lot of hands that other poker players are unwilling to play.
Gus Hansen may just be the best young player in poker today. In the inaugural season of the World Poker Tour, he won both the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio and the LA Poker Classic at the Commerce Casino. In season two he won the Poker Stars Caribbean Adventure, and placed 3rd at the Five Diamond World Poker Classic at the Bellagio.
In 2004 he was one of the first three inductees into the World Poker Tour Walk of Fame, with Doyle Brunson, and actor James Garner.

I don't know what to say about this guy?? He continues to blow me away with cards that he plays. Yet, I continue to see him sitting at final tables with people. It's like everyone knows at the table that 75% of the time he has nothing, but many of the times they are all still scared to call him. I'd think by now, if they had any type of hand - they would play it against Hansen. |

I don't think he is lucky at all... He is just that good. Most cards on the flop are usually of the low type and he plays them better than anyone. He takes a lot of chances and when you play so many hands, you are usually going to hit something. Most people play few hands and dont even hit something. Basically he has some big balls to play the way he does but that's why he is so good and unpredictable. |

I like Gus Hanson. I think he's very fun to watch when he's on a rush. I think his game is taylored made to be playing against the pros. He's super aggressive, get's his opponets in heads up situations. He knows his opponets are not going to go up against him unless they have a really good hand. This is why I really don't think a Gus Hanson strategy would work at low limits. It's hard to get people heads up, and it's even harder to get them to fold their hands once they've caught a piece of the flop. __________________ I've done everything I've ever wanted to do, except win a million dollars

I'm intrigued by Gus's style of play. Not sure I am a fan but no doubt in my mind he can play rags as good as anything else. That is the part that I think he does the best. You truly never know if he is holding the nuts or not. I can't really say it is all luck because we only see TV edited versions of his play but it is truly unique. __________________ "You call...gonna be all over, baby." -- Scotty Nguyen |

Reply with quote | #8 | Gus is a supremely good player. It takes skill to play a lot of cards and win. People are deceived that he is so lucky, because they only show the `lucky` hands in WSOP highlights and WPT highlights.
They never show the `ordinary` hands where gus just outplays and bluffs people, because its just so ordinary for him. He knows that his loose aggressive style of play can pay him off too. His pocket AA will be payed off more than any other solid player, because of his aggressive reputation.
His `madness` is all calculated. He can play `bad cards` well but he can also play suited connectors, pairs, and big hands well, making him a very adjustable, hard-to-beat player, because he doesnt need cards to win. |
